When Facebook was the biggest game console in the world
Between 2008 and 2012, a huge share of Facebook users played games in their browser. Zynga, Playfish and Playdom built games around your friends list: you sent gifts, visited neighbours and begged for help with your farm, restaurant or city. Then players moved to smartphones, the studios followed, and most of these games were switched off between 2012 and 2016. The end of Adobe Flash on 31 December 2020 closed the last holdouts, including the original FarmVille.
